Elementor vs Gutenberg: Which Should You Build Your WordPress Site With?

When you build a WordPress website today, you usually choose between two ways of creating pages: Elementor, the popular drag-and-drop page builder, or Gutenberg, WordPress’s built-in block editor. Both can produce professional websites. The right choice depends on your design needs and who will edit the site.

What each one is

  • Elementor is a visual page builder plugin. You design directly on the page, with fine control over layout, spacing, typography, animations and responsive settings. Elementor Pro adds theme building, forms, popups and dynamic content.
  • Gutenberg (the block editor) has been part of WordPress since version 5.0. You build pages with blocks and patterns, and block themes can control the whole site design.

Design freedom

Elementor gives designers and non-technical editors a lot of visual control without code — pixel-perfect layouts from Figma or XD are easier to achieve. The block editor has improved a lot and is great for clean, consistent layouts, but complex custom designs often need custom blocks or code.

Speed

A carefully built Elementor site can be fast — it is mostly about how it is built: limiting add-ons, using global styles, optimising images and caching. Gutenberg sites start lighter by default because there is less extra code. Either can be slow if built carelessly.

Ease of editing for your team

Elementor’s visual editing is very intuitive for marketing teams and business owners — you see exactly what you change. The block editor is simple for writing posts and editing structured pages, and it is already built into WordPress.

Long-term maintenance

With Elementor, your design depends on the plugin (and Pro licence if you use Pro features). Gutenberg is part of core WordPress. In both cases, regular updates and testing keep things healthy.

My recommendation

  • Choose Elementor for marketing websites, landing pages and businesses that want lots of design freedom and easy visual editing.
  • Choose Gutenberg for content-heavy sites and blogs, or when maximum lightness and a native WordPress workflow matter most.
  • Mixing works too: many sites use Elementor for key landing pages and the block editor for blog posts — like this one.
