A website is not a one-time project. WordPress, your theme and your plugins release updates constantly — for new features, compatibility and, most importantly, security. Without maintenance, sites slowly break, slow down or get hacked.
What a good maintenance plan includes
Updates — done safely
Core, theme and plugin updates, ideally tested first (or at least followed by a check of key pages, forms and checkout). Blindly clicking “update all” on a live store is risky.
Backups
Automatic daily or weekly backups stored off-site, plus a backup before every round of updates. A backup is only useful if it can be restored — so restores should be tested.
Security monitoring
Malware scans, firewall rules, login protection and checking for suspicious users or file changes. (See the full WordPress security checklist.)
Uptime monitoring
Alerts when the site goes down, so problems are fixed before customers notice.
Performance checks
Keeping caching, image optimisation and the database healthy so the site stays fast as you add content.
Small content edits
Updating text, images, prices or adding a new section — the little changes that otherwise sit on your to-do list.
Reporting
A short monthly summary of what was updated, backed up and fixed.
What happens without maintenance
- Plugins conflict after a WordPress update and pages break.
- Known vulnerabilities in old plugins get exploited.
- Contact forms silently stop sending emails — and you lose leads without knowing.
- The site gets slower every month.
- When something goes wrong, there is no recent backup.
DIY or hire someone?
If you are comfortable with WordPress and have time each month, you can do much of this yourself. Most business owners prefer to hand it off so they can focus on their work — and so there is an expert ready when something urgent happens.
